Bristol began for a city about the Gloucestershire side from the Avon, but mainly because it grew it extended throughout the river into Somerset. In 1373 Edward III proclaimed "which the town of Bristol with its suburbs and precincts shall henceforth be independent in the counties of Gloucester and Somerset ... and that it ought to be a county by
